Holiday Season Fire Safety Tips
The weather is getting chillier here in Massachusetts, which means the holiday season is approaching! Decorating for the fall and winter holidays is a fun family tradition, but it's important to follow a few guidelines to keep your home and family safe.
Fall Fire Safety Tips:
In the fall season, crepe paper and corn stalks can catch fire easily. Keep Halloween decorations away from open flames and away from other heat sources like light bulbs, heaters, and fireplaces. Use battery-operated candles instead of real ones for Jack-O-Lanterns in and out of your home. If you do use a real candle, keep pumpkins away from walkways and anything else nearby that can burn. Make sure children are watched when candles are lit.
Winter Fire Safety Tips:
Cooking is the top cause of holiday fires, according to the USFA. It is easy to get distracted during the busy holiday season, so it is important to never leave cooking unattended. Make sure that you have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen that is rated to put out all types of fires. Be aware of lit candles in your home and keep them away from curtains, furniture, and anything else that could potentially catch fire.
